Suu Kyi, from memory...

Today, as I was packing up stuff to shift office room, an old college magazine from 1995 popped up. It was the magazine of the student union of which I was Secretary and A. Suresh (now a scientist at NCAP, Delhi) was Editor. A full page feature on Aung San Suu Kyi that we had put up caught my attention. That year, SLORC had released Suu Kyi from house arrest after six years of detention. Just thought this was an apt time to post that feature here, again. The text, written by Suresh, went like this:

"ജനാധിപത്യത്തിന്റെ സൂര്യോദയം അകലെയല്ല.
വിജയത്തിലേക്കിനിയും ദൂരമേറെയുണ്ട്.
സമാധാനത്തിന്റെയും സഹനത്തിന്റെയും പാത നാം പിന്തുടരണം.
മുന്നോട്ടുള്ള പ്രയാണം സുഖകരമാണെന്ന പ്രതീക്ഷ നമുക്കില്ല.
എങ്കിലും ലക്ഷ്യത്തിലെത്തും എന്ന് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കുറപ്പുണ്ട്."

കരള്‍ പിളരുന്ന കാരാഗൃഹത്തിന്റെ ഏകാന്തതയെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യേച്ച്ചയും മനുഷ്യസ്നേഹവും കൊണ്ട് അതിജീവിച്ച നെല്‍സണ്‍ മണ്ടെലക്ക് ഒരു പിന്ഗാമി. ബര്‍മീസ് പട്ടാളഭരണകൂടം വിധിച്ച ഏകാന്തതടവിനെ മറികടന്നു ഓങ്ങ് സാങ്ങ് സൂക്യി പുറത്തു വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. മ്യാന്മാറിന്റെ ഓമനപുത്രിയുടെ മോചനത്തെ ലോകം മുഴുവനുമുള്ള ജനാധിപത്യവിശ്വാസികള്‍ സഹര്‍ഷം സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്യുന്നു. തമസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ തടങ്കല്‍പ്പാളയങ്ങള്‍ തകര്‍ത്ത് പുറത്തു വന്ന ഈ ധീരവനിതക്ക് ബര്‍മീസ് ജനതയ്ക്ക് പുതിയൊരു ജീവിതം നല്‍കാനാവുമോ എന്നതാണ് ഇനിയത്തെ ചോദ്യം.
